DAY 46
May 30, 2009
Sat 1:16 AM
another overcast day... no matter, went to the Angels-Mariners game. I wore my mariners hat, my vacation hat it is. you can look at vacation pictures of mine from europe, england, disney world... wherever, it doesn't matter, i always wear that hat. i don't know why, just happened. and it's odd, becasue it's not even a fitted hat, which i prefer. i think it's probably one of the last adjustable hats i've ever bought. i got it at a timber rattlers v. mariners game. that's why i like the mariners, they were (until recently) the team the timber rattlers were affiliated with. and i like ichiro suzuki, he's a great player.
so, i wore my mariners hat to the game, but made it clear to those around me that i wasn't a die-hard seattle fan or anything, and that i just wished for a good game. nothing but love for the angels, the los angeles angels of anaheim. stupid name though, pick a city and commit already. anyway, it was a good game, and the mariners won. the angels have this weird thing with the rally monkey, i thought it was kinda creepy, Q thought it was hilarious. either way, it sure was different.
oh, and i almost forgot, today i finally got in n out burger. glorious. double double, fries, and a shake. ugh, so wonderful... worth the long line. so great, in n out.
anyway, then we came back and intended to go out to a bar in OB (Ocean Beach) which is the weird hippie district of San Diego. Then we learned that the place where we were gonna meet up with some people had a ten dollar cover charge. boo, buzz kill. we were totally over OB, it didn't take much, so the $10 cover charge coupled with the fact that we couldn't even find a parking spot prompted us to head back. but not before we stopped at Santana's. and there wasn't even a line! i got the chimichanga, and i gotta say, it was good, but Roberto's was better. This reminds me of The Office episode with two pizza joints- Alfredo's Pizza Cafe and Pizza by Alfredo. if you haven't seen it, watch it. anyway, as far as the chimis go... i gotta give it to Roberto's, although i did order it at 2 pm, whereas i got Santana's chimi during prime bar close time when they brace for all the drunk people with the munchies. anyway, it was still good.
that's it, we'll see what's in store tomorrow. hopefully not overcast. it even rained here today. RAINED. i didn't think that happened in california, let alone southern california. oh, and check off another CA thing i experienced today- gridlock traffic on Interstate 5.

DAY 45
May 28, 2009
Thu 11:02 PM
overcast day today, damn you sun and weather, don't you know I'm on vacation? no matter, won't let that get me down. i was planning on going to the beach today, but due to the may gray that was scrapped. boo. instead, wondered around PB and finally went to Roberto's. Had the chimichanga and a Pepsi. and then felt like i was gonna explode. meant to do more wondering, but instead headed back to Q's and instantly went into a food coma. that's ok, i'm on vacation, i'm allowed to do nothing. then we went to rocky's, a locals bar that only serves burgers and fries. my kind of place, although their beer choices were rather sub-par... good thing for water, it's free anyway. the burger was good though, not wisconsin good, but for san diego, very good. i have to keep this in mind with everything, no longer in wisconsin. things that were at first odd now make sense... free smog check, yeah, that seems right (although i'm still not really sure what this is, and if it's mandatory or not). fat-free this, and eco-friendly that... sure, why not. organic soy milk... hmm, not sure i could ever get used to that one. but for the beaches, weather (well, usually) and palm trees... l'd put up with all the "organic" food. i still would like to experience an earthquake while i'm at here, i've seen everything else... day laborers at the home depot, i've walked past a hare krishna temple, i'm going to in n out burger tomorrow... yeah, an earthquake would complete everything.
angels game tomorrow, should be fun. i realize that my blog posts are pretty mundane and short lately... i'm on vacation. when i get back to wisco and have more time on my hands to write all that inspires me. and i am really looking forward to jay moving one hour earlier, i'm watching his second to last show right now. man, he is so much funnier than letterman. so much funnier.

DAY 44
May 27, 2009
Wed 11:33 PM
so, another good day in San Diego... i gotta admit, it's pretty hard to have a bad day when you're on vacation, especially vacation in Southern California. got off to a later start than i originally intended, i can firmly say i am established in the Pacific time zone because i slept till ten this morning. then, i worked on an important email, had to get that down right. watched the beginning of the UEFA Champions League final... i know, soccer. i admit, i am merely a casual soccer fan... the term "casual" might even be too strong to describe me, but since i own a Man U jersey I figure I should try to feign interest. Caught the end of the game at a bar down on ganett, i think it was called RT's or something. Nice place, had some good tacos and a Newcastle (if i'm watching and cheering an English soccer team, I should drink a good English beer). Here's a tip, if you want to get a quick buzz, make the first thing you consume in a day a strong English ale. that sure did the trick, although, the taco combo and two glasses of water shortly thereafter quickly sobered me back up.
walked down along ganett back to the beach, but it was overcast all day, well, overcast for San Diego standards, still wonderful outside. Went to a souvenir shop, picked up a california license plate- that'll look good on my wall back home. Then stopped in a nice fight shop i walked past yesterday, good variety of merchandise, fully stocked. wish i could buy almost everything in there.
then, back to Q's place, she got back from work earlier than yesterday so we watched Hamlet 2 and I cooked my famous McCormick seasoning chicken with red potatoes and rosemary (and for the first time i used fresh rosemary. It turned out really good, I'm glad because i'm used to just cooking game hens and not whole chickens. I let it cook for two hours, it was completely cooked through and still very juicy.
still sad thinking that my pub burned down, well, not down, just burned. i read that the estimated damage is $300,000. oh well, can't let it get to me on vacay. tomorrow i hope for a sunny day versus overcast, but i'm on vacation, and i'm in san diego, so i'll take what i can get.

DAY 43(i)
DAY 43
May 26, 2009
Tue 10:16 PM
this subtracting two hours from my laptop time is really getting to me, back home it's 12:16- my usual blogging time. and it's already tomorrow. but not here, not in the golden state.
today was spent wondering around PB. i went the wrong way and ended up walking around the bay, and back around the bay, until i made it to the beach. ahhh, the beach. glorious. tomorrow i think i'll bring a beach towel and lye on the beach. stopped in a couple skate shops, looking for some cool Vans, i'm guessing the really cool ones are out here somewhere. overall, a nice relaxing day walking around PB. had ice cream for lunch (you can do these things when you're on vacation) on the boardwalk at a place called Big Olaf's. Sounds more like an ice cream shop in minneapolis as opposed to san diego, but whatever, i'll take it. then walked by a 7/Elven and stopped in to get a Slurpee. i got addicted to slurpees out in DC, there was one practically hooked to my freshman dorm. so i was all excited to have a slurpee and i don't know if the slurpee machine was busted or what, but it was liquid slurpee and it sucked... i had two sips then threw it out. hardly a loss. tomorrow, i will go to Roberto's, and stop at the fight shop i noticed on Grand.
i heard today that my favorite pub, nay, the only bar i frequent in shorewood burned last night. I hope it is rebuilt, not just for the amazing chicken nachos, trivia, darts, and abundant pints of 1664, but because it is the only place i gather with friends in milwaukee. it was a nice, not crowded bar with great beer on tap. the same cannot be said for many other places in milwaukee, and it was nearby. dammit, that is unfortunate. good thing i'm in san diego, soften the blow.
oh, and i heard back from my old friend from high school, i think i'm gonna head up to LA on friday, still have some logistics to figure out, but should be simple. i'm really looking forward to catching up.
that's all, time to relax, watch a little leno tonight, and sleep for another exciting day tomorrow.

DAY 42
May 25, 2009
Mon 10:31 PM
so, yesterday was the first day i missed blogging... oh well, it was bound to happen eventually. let's just say i wasn't in the most perfect state to write. we went out to a nice bar and had a few drinks and then wanted to go get burritos at roberto's, a decent burrito stand (i'm told santana's is the best). apparently taxis refuse to take people there late at night because it's so crowded, lame. we offered to pay more, no dice. he even drove up to the place to prove a point... like there it is, look there's people, no can do. super lame. i wanted a burrito. tomorrow, tomorrow i shall have my burrito.
today was a nice relaxing day after all the bbqs this weekend. yesterday we went up to temecula to a bbq, very nice. there was even a bouncy thing, i'm told this is a requirement in california if there's a certain amount of people at a get-together... bouncy thing required.
today was spend lying out in the sun, and then going and getting some sushi. of course, lying in the sun has consequences when you expose skin that does not ordinarily get such treatment... my shoulders. right now i look like i'm wearing two red shoulder pads... nice. missed that spot with the sunscreen, another reason not to wear a tank top. and, i wore sandals today on my walk back from cvs... bad idea, only about 8 blocks but i already got two blisters. so, note to myself, no more tank tops, and no more sandals. great, now i won't look at all like a tourist.
anyway, the sushi was very good, and was in abundance. i tried some of the ginger that comes with it to cleanse your palate... how to put this, it tasted like chewing a wet nap. but, other than that very good sushi. and, i think my body is finally aclimated to pacific time, it's 10:44 here and i don't feel tired at all. we'll see what time i wake up tomorrow, that'll be the real indicator.
tomorrow is an exploration day of PB, lots of stuff to do. and Q informed me that people like to drink during the day, an fyi that i'll run into some drunk people. noted. and i gotta say, another great thing about california is the dui checkpoints they have. what a novel idea. no, what a logical idea, i love how wisconsin- the state that truly needs dui checkpoints, doesn't have them. i heard a lot of talk about them this holiday weekend, good for california. stupid wisconsin, will that state ever learn? i doubt it, another reason to move.
i sent a message to an old friend from high school who lives in southern california, it would be nice to meet up and it'd give me a reason to take a day-trip up to LA. i hope he replies, it would be nice to see him.
that's all, nothing much going on... except i'm still in SAN DIEGO!!! and i'm seeing lots of palm trees, have i mentioned i love palm trees? especially the tall, thin ones that you see sticking up above all else. i love this place, this city, this state. i am in love.

DAY 41
May 23, 2009
Sat 11:29 PM
wonderful day today... except it was funny this morning, first i woke up at 6:30, wondering why i got up so early, then fell back asleep for awhile and was up again at 8:30... then i finally realized that i was still on central time and to me it felt like 10:30. i decided not to fight it anymore and get up. went grocery shopping and cruised around Pacific Beach, or PB as it will be referred to from here on out (that's what locals call it). great, laid back beach community, definitely the place to be. and gorgeous, gorgeous weather, in the morning it was overcast, typical may gray this time of year, but it cleared up late morning and was sunny and wonderful. really glad i bought those shorts before i left.
barbeque in the afternoon, lots of fun. and now here, blogging. ahhh, i love being in california, it just feels great. but, i am actually getting tired now, so sorry, that's all for today.

DAY 40(i)
May 23, 2009
Sat 12:30 AM (Pacific Standard Time)
I made it! I am in California, and i have barely stopped smiling since i landed. it's wonderful. my flight was delayed by half hour, but we still arrived at the time we were scheduled... not sure how that all works, all i know is that my head is still hurting from doing all the conversions from central to pacific, to eastern to central and finally to pacific. My laptop is still (and shall remain) on central time, so i'll just have to make it a habit of subtracting two or, if i'm truly lazy, looking at my cell phone.
Q came and got me at the airport, and we just headed back to her place. Nice place... hell, it could be a cardboard box and i'd still be excited... but really nice place and i'm looking forward to checking out the surrounding areas during the daytime. but, i've already seen many palm trees, so mission accomplished there.
and, i realized in my recap of all that i fit in my luggage i missed four pairs of shoes... yes, four. a lot for me, but seeing as how i'm in southern california i only felt it was necessary to have some of my dear vans with me. i brought my all black dress Vans, the classic black and white checkerboard Vans, and my new rising sun Hosoi Vans. And a pair of Speedo flip flops, not to mention the $15 dada shoes i wore on the plane that i got in high school... they're still one of my most comfortable pairs of shoes. and i'm glad i bought those boardshorts, Hurley is the brand, and I'm told it's also a california brand... surf brand. So, between my Vans kicks, Hurley shorts, Sinister t-shirts (also a socal brand) and my Oakley sunglasses I'm pretty sure i'll be cool... or at least in my mind and that's all that matters.
hmmm, more to mention... no, there's only so much to recant about the airports and flights... the next couple of posts will be more interesting.
but, I'M IN SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! YEAH

DAY 40
May 22, 2009
Fri 4:11 PM (Eastern Standard Time)
Made it to Detroit, couldn’t get on an earlier flight to Minneapolis, but it worked out ok, the flight I wanted to get on to Minneapolis got delayed by two hours anyway. And the extra time gave me a chance to put more songs on my walkman… added some red hot chili peppers, nirvana, pearl jam and stone temple pilots… and collective soul, I saw them in concert with Q and we went backstage. It was sweet.
Right now I’m typing this entry on Microsoft word, and it’s really really weird. I’m not paying to use the internet here, so I’m writing this now and I’ll input it later. I’ll have been in three states today and three time zones. I love how at the airport in Detroit they make routine announcements reminding people that they’re in the Eastern time zone. It’s cool, I kept forgetting, that means my flight isn’t as long as I thought, and my layover isn’t as long either. It still sucks that I get into san diego around 10 pm, and that’s with the time difference.
I feel bad for my laptop right now, outlets are a hot commodity here at the Detroit-fort wayne county airport and so I’m running on battery power. I think I’m gonna watch the dark knight after writing this.
And I just gotta say, I’m the expert when it comes to packing, seriously. I fit 13 pairs of underwear and socks, three bras, six tank tops, 13 t-shirts, one polo shirt, one nice shirt, two pairs of jeans, one pair of black pants, two boardshorts, two jackets, one zippy hood, three hats, my toiletry bag, and some cheese all in my rolly bag. And it’s not even heavy or that jam full. I love my rolly bag, it is so beatup, It’s been everywhere. I was gonna take my new shiny light blue one, but I didn’t think it could hold as much. This atlantic bag can withstand anything. And, because my first flight was on a little plane, I had to gate check my rolly bag… my backpack with my laptop, camera, and all my other portable electronics does not leave me. Anyway, I don’t mind gate checking, you get your bag back as soon as you land. And a lesson in flying, don’t take a black bag. Everyone has black luggage, and the cart with all the gate-checked bags was turned around and all you could see was the wheels, a lot of little black wheels. And my ugly (I say ugly with the utmost affection and respect for my bag) brown roller was so easy to spot. Everyone just stood there staring and at first I couldn’t figure out why, my focus was fixed on my bag… but every bag was black. It was hilarious. I just waltzed up, grabbed my bag, and headed out. It would’ve been funny if I had brought my little blue bag, that would’ve stood out like a sore thumb. I’m watching cnn right now waiting in the terminal… I think nancy grace has to rename her show The Casey Anthony variety sideshow half hour (I think her show’s a half hour) starring Nancy Grace. What a joke of a host she is.
Anyway, back to the flight. It went well, and I ran into an acquantaince at the Appleton airport who was flying to Germany, so it was nice to have someone to talk to. And the man sitting next to me was very nice and going to Baltimore, so we chatted on the short flight to Detroit, nice to have someone to talk to and not just listen to the walkman.
Man, I have just been breaking out in hives like crazy lately… at least these (mostly) haven’t been too itchy. I hate this, it’s some autoimmune disorder- I’m allergic to myself. Great, my body is duking it out with some other part of my body and my skin pays the price. Wonderful.
Hmmm, I feel like there’s more I wanted to say… that’s it for now, much more excitement when I get to San Diego!!!!!! Hurray… Graduation present to myself!

tired, very tired right now... but had a fabulous day at six flags earlier. superman was the best ride of the day, and went on dark knight for the first time... nice queue setup, but overall kinda disappointing. i mean, it wasn't a terrible ride, but it wasn't anything i really need to go on again. it was mostly just sharp turns, which were jarring, but not thrilling.
then packed up stuff and drove home, and then went to green bay to play poker with ma. i didn't do very good, not surprising, my brain was fried long before i got up there.

Tue 11:12 PM
beautiful day in milwaukee today, i think it got up to 80 degrees. but, i had to work. it's ok, six flags tomorrow! WOOHOO! nothing else exciting, packed up all my clothes... fyi you can fit an entire chest of drawers worth of clothes, plus sweatshirts, plus towels, plus a good amount of hanging clothes into a 46 inch Samsung HDTV box. Now, getting said box into car, that's gonna be more fun tomorrow, seeing as how it weighs a fair amount now. i really should be packing now as well, not much more to pack, but stuff i'd rather not forget.
that's all, boring day... but fun stuff coming up. oh, and i checked the northwest airlines timetables, there are four flights from minneapolis to san diego, and only two from detroit, so i have to get on a flight to minneapolis if i'm gonna get to california any sooner. i hope this works.

Mon 11:38 PM
dammit popeye's... i finally stopped in after work and you messed up my order. i ordered the four piece chicken meal with all dark meat... instead i got a three piece meal with a breast, wing, and leg. one piece of dark meat... on stinkin' piece of dark! I hate white meat, to me, dark meat is like diet soda or light beer... why bother? dark has so much more flavor, is more moist... all around supperior part of the chicken. dammit. at least it was deep-fried, that helps, but still, i was really looking forward to some meaty thighs... chicken thighs. but thank goodness they gave me six packets of hot sauce... i'm white, i don't like spicy... i just want dark meat.
read today that tony kornheiser is no longer going to be on MNF... thank god, he sucked. he was just ackward and not funny, i would rather have had an empty chair. jon gruden is replacing him... not really a fan of him as a coach, but i'm willing to give him a chance as an announcer, anything is better than kornheiser.
hmm, i think that's it. got more songs put on my walkman, up to about 160 songs. still no where near the over 700 i have on my ipod mini, but the majority of those songs i don't listen to anyway. i get a fresh start with my walkman, i'm thinking about 300, 400 songs max that i really want on there. the vast majority is hard rock, sprinkled with some heavy metal, grunge, punk, hip hop, alternative, pop (only michael jackson) and some other derivatives of rock music.
that's it, another work day tomorrow, and then free until june... june 5th to be exact! hoo-rah!

DAY 35
May 18, 2009
Mon 12:21 AM
today was my graduation day... woo-hoo. but, i had to work, so i didn't go. a happy coincidence, as i wasn't planning on going anyway. there ceremony was at 1:30, and i'm sure i would've been thrilled to hear the chancellor speak, and wait for over two hours with a bunch of people i don't know to hear my name said once. whoop-dee doo basil. i'm not a ceremony person, never was, never will be. for me, the experience of four years in earning a degree cannot be summed up or celebrated in the u.s. cellular arena in a boring ceremony i don't care about. just can't. so why bother? is my diploma or my degree any less valuable because i skipped the ceremony? I don't think so. I even tell my family, that if i ever get married, i'm just going to vegas... quick, easy, inexpensive, and much more fun. Tons more fun. I hate large parties, and I wouldn't want to plan for something like that... picking out arrangements, invitations... not to mention the dressing up... all that jazz... so not me, i just wouldn't care. I'm not saying any of this is a bad thing, but it's not for me. Have somebody dressed as elvis perform the ceremony and have it done in 10 minutes then go play craps... i'm down with that. and graduation... i went to school here for two years, it's not that i don't like the school or anything, it's just that i don't have really any attachement to it. same goes for my old school... although, i would've gone to that ceremony because the graduation takes place either on the mall or on the ellipse by the white house. and i'm glad that i have parents who are cool enough to respect my decision... they just want to ensure that i don't regret it. nope, won't. originally i was planning on going to a brewer game or something to celebrate, but that didn't work out cause the brewers don't play at all this week. thanks mlb. so, instead i'm going to six flags with my sister... that's my graduation ceremony. riding batman and raging bull... helluva lot more exciting then a boring ceremony where i have to wear a gown and a goofy hat. what's with those hats anyway? did somebody unroll their diploma and put it on their head? not to mention, california for almost two weeks... if that's not a celebration, then i don't know what is. happy graduation to me.
today i did go and get toppers pizza for me and my sister, a new one just opend up across the street from work. i've only heard good things... it was good, but not amazing or anything. but i got a good deal on a large three-topping... sausage, mushrooms and green peppers- that's my kind of pizza. their breadstix were good too.
then watched survivor with the sis... i don't watch the show, she does, but it's interesting sometimes. then she watched something on cults... doesn't interest me at all, but she's fascinated by them. not in a bad way, not fascinated in a 'i want to join way' but she finds a lot of stuff that creeps me out interesting. on the show they had a "cult expert" she said she could do that, with all the shows she watches on the subject. i said with all the shows she watches (that fill up the dvr) she could also be a serial killer and nazi expert. cult, serial killer, and nazi expert... i call it the trifecta of death, i mean really, what more can you add to that? i said i'd rather be the fluffy kitten and lollipop expert, you know, happy things. not my sister, she's into all that crazy stuff, again i mean into as in learing about it, not into as she wants to join the nazi party and become a serial killer. no, that's not it. but trifecta of death, or death triumvirate... like the roman policy with caesar, pompey, and that other guy what was his name... oh, right crassus. i remember that question used to always come up on tests in history class, and i always got triumvirate confused with trifecta and i'd get it wrong... i guess that's what happens when your parents take you to the dog track when you're younger.
and speaking of animal racing, how bout the preakness yesterday? unfortunately i was unable to watch it, but that filly rachel alexandra won. the jockey was the same who rode on mine that bird in the derby. so stupid that the filly's old owners didn't run her in the derby, she could've had a shot at the triple crown. now, it looks like maybe the jockey could win a unique triple crown. hopefully i'll be able to watch the belmont.

DAY 34
May 17, 2009
Sun 12:34 AM
got to open at work today... hurray! that meant i could actually accomplish something today. brought back some boxes too to help move stuff next week back home. my sister was all confused when she saw the giant tv box... the box of the Samsung LED TV i want to get... and will eventually get. it's already set in stone, when i set my mind to something i want i get it... eventually. that tv is the greatest tv ever, it takes the best elements of an LCD and plasma and throws in some new features... like the fact that it's only 1.2 inches thick... yeah, 1.2. and it's eco-friendly (not that i really care all that much, sorry environment, my entertainment comes first... i'm just being honest). anyway, she called and asked what was up with the tv... i told her it was just an empty box *sigh* sadly, soon it will not be just an empty box. but i learned an important lesson, it can fit in my car :)
then Console and I went and had dinner at the persian place down the streat (amazing) and went to the hookah bar. it was nice, i haven't smoked shisha in quite awhile. From what my friends back in DC taught me, shisha is what you smoke, hookah is the name of the pipe. we smoked, i think it was mango peach flavored. it was good, can't go wrong with the fruit flavors. now i want a hookah to bring home as well... there's a perfect patio out back to smoke on. tonight i even was able to make smoke rings... about three of them unitentionally, i don't know how i did it, but it looked cool. will have to practice this summer.
then to the pub to have a round of 1664s... then left the pub because it was karaoke night. don't much care for karaoke, and the dart board was being used. ate some pizza at Console's had a Strongbow in a bottle (the only beverage i think tastes better in a bottle versus on tap) and watched G.I. Jane on tv... it's one of those movie that you shouldn't watch on tv because some of the dialogue is, well, lacking. but a good movie nonetheless.
that's it, now i want to sleep, work tomorrow... and monday, and tuesday.

still playing with my zippo... god i love that. saw angels and demons today, good movie. maKES ME WANT... oops, bumped the caps button there. makes me want to go to rome, rome looks cool. i love being italian, being italian is the best. name another ethnicity that has the complete package. food, culture, fashion, art, sports, sports cars, attractive people, did i mention food... italians have it all. how bout all those amazing italian artists... michaleangelo, dante, raphael, vivaldi, verdi, pacino, de niro, that guy that jumps on seats at the Oscars... right, benini. scientists- da Vinci, galileo, marconi, fermi, volta... great food- pizza, spaghetti, anything parmigianna, minestrone, marscapone, gelatto, Chef Boyardee. and sports- they kick butt at soccer. i mean, how can't they, their country is shaped like a boot. and their cars- ferrari, lamborghini, mazeratti. and the hottest names in fashion are italian- armani, gucci, prada, fendi, dolce & gabbana. not to mention they're all increidbly sexy (they don't even need to wear the hot clothes)... well, not all, but most. and the language is super sexy... so much cooler than french, to me, french sounds snooty and uppidy, italian just sounds suave. like dr. albright says to dick on 3rd rock (in the episode when dick is trying to pick out a nationality)
...after reading a bunch of Dr. Albright's anthropology books
Dick: These books are all dry facts but no value judgement, you're the expert you tell me, which one is the best?
Albright: Oh, there there's no best it's all subjective.
Dick: Well, which do you find most interesting?
Albright: Oh, I don't know... I like the creative ambition of the Maori people, the Polynesians with their love of nature, the...
Dick: Which is the sexiest?
Albright: Italians.
Dick: Italians?
Albright: Smokey, swarthy, gotta have them.
if 3rd Rock says it, it has to be true. i mean, don't get me wrong, i also like being german and slovenien... but germans have a lot of baggage (the two times i watched schindler's list i felt terrible... and that was a movie about a good german!) and nobody has even heard of slovenia... that nice, picturesque little country in the alps. i think there are two types of people in the world- italians, and those who wish they were italian. thank goodness i'm italian, and even better, i look italian. i can pull it off. my sister is, allegedly, just as italian as i am, but she doesn't look it at all. she can have the aryan looks, i'd rather be more mediteranean. although, it's funny, right there, i used the word "aryan" in the way that hitler (that bastard) did; refering to blue-eyed, blonde people... when in actuality, aryan originally meant people originating from south-central Asia- Iran, India, Pakistan, and Afghanistan. I wouldn't exactly call those people blonde and blue-eyed. Kinda also like how those stupid nazis hijacked the swastika... which originally was (and still is) a symbol used in hinduism and buddhism. geez, did hitler have any original ideas? uncreative bastard, no wonder he never cut it at art school, he stole all his ideas from other places... not to mention twisted them to make them evil.
anyway, back to being italian and why it's awesome. because it is. current world cup champions baby, the biggest sporting event in the world. yeah, viva italia! forza italia! Mamma Mia! all that good stuff. but i will say this, pride in your ancestor's place of origin apparently skips generations because my parents don't care at all. well, i shouldn't say don't care, but certainly don't share my enthusiasm. take for example the world cup, the only time i ever care about soccer (once every four years is enough for me). Italy and Germany routinely dominate, so that's pretty cool cause that's who i cheer for. I don't even cheer for the U.S. because nobody in america cares, i'd rather a country that would appreciate it more win. so, i was all excited last world cup because both italy and germany made it to the semi-finals. and i asked my parents if they were excited... here's what they said.
Me: Dad, Italy is in semis, aren't you excited, don't you want them to win?
Dad: No, Italians stare at you. (apparently when we were in Italy my Dad didn't like how Italians stared... I didn't have a problem with/even notice this... I guess i was too busy talking to the nice, cute guy at the foot locker outside venice who kept asking me how good his english was.)
Me: Hey Mom, Germany is in the semis, are you cheering for them?
Mom: No, Germans are rude.
so, there you have it, my completely american parents who are not enthused about the athletic dominance of the teams representing their grandparents. fine, i'll cheer enough for both of them. speaking of the world cup, recently i read an article on Yahoo! Sports about the possibility of hosting the Super Bowl in london... yeah, good idea (dripping with sarcasm). the author goes on to say that hosting america's biggest sporting event international would put it on par with the olympics and the world cup... hahaha, don't make me laugh. here i will pick apart these arguments...
5. Knowing that a Super Bowl is coming to London will give folks in England an incentive to learn more about the game. It will create natural interest in the sport in the years preceding the event, and it will help the sport take a chunk out of the obsession with soccer.
yeah, hosting an american football game will really take a chunk out of the obsession with soccer. sure it will. just like hosting the champions league final here would take a chunk out of our obsession with american football. uh huh, it'd do just that... NOT. and give folks in england a chance to learn about the game... what makes you think they want to learn about the game? nobody cares about AMERICAN football but americans, it's just too complicated. and i don't blame them, as much as i think it's boring, i understand why soccer is the most popular sport in the world... it's easy to understand. kick ball in goal... got it. saying english people should learn about american football is like saying that we should learn about cricket... a sport that no one, NO ONE outside the former british realms can ever hope to understand. we shouldn't care that the rest of the world doesn't know about and doesn't care about our sport... it's our sport! and forcing it on them is not the way to go; it's arrogant to think that just by playing it there, they'd want to learn it. Oh, look at this gift america is giving us, by sharing their amazing sport with us... it's not like they don't have their own sports.
6. A London Super Bowl would be the most hyped sporting event of all time, with unprecedented coverage—not just in the U.S. and Britain but in every other country. It would place the event in the running to compete on equal footing afforded to the Olympics and the World Cup, and it could elevate the game's status as possibly an international sports holiday.
again, don't make me laugh. Most hyped sporting event of all time? Unprecedented coverage? Look, the entire world is not in love with all things america, i think the world would be like, hey, why the hell are they playing the super bowl in london? that makes no sense. using this logic, by playing the, oh, i don't know, kansas high school state basketball championship in new york would turn it into a national event. no, it wouldn't. equal footing of the olympics and world cup... you seriously think that a game between the miami dolphins and philadelphia eagles (just picked two teams at random) could equal entire nations competing against each other in either the most poplular sport in the world (world cup) or the oldest and most prestigious sporting event ever (olympics)? hahaha, wow.
7. The aftermath of the event could propel the NFL into a real competition for top sport in the world, akin to the '70s-era domestic battle between baseball and football. And why shouldn't fans of American football want our greatest sport to be the world's greatest sport? If folks can get worked up about a bunch of guys in shorts chasing a white ball with not much scoring, they'd be downright rabid about football once they give it a full and fair chance.
again, no they wouldn't. you're assuming that the world wants a change in the heirarchy of sports. soccer is popular because a) its easy to understand, and b) anyone can play it.. and you really need is a ball and nets. true, football you can play with just a ball, but the rest of the world will not suddenly jump on the american football bandwagon overnight... or ever. it won't happen. what world is this guy living in... a world that only exists within a tiny radius of canton, ohio? this argument also assumes that there is something inherently flawed in the game of soccer... that people have to be messed up in the head or something to like it. yes, i will admit it's boring for me, but have you watched it with soccer fans?? they love it, they don't see it as the simple, inferior game it's being painted as by this argument. i know a lot of people who don't like watching golf, i do. it's personal preference. and as a big american football fan, i don't care at all if it's not the most popular sport in the world. as long as i can watch it and follow my team, i'm happy. the fact that people in brazil or france don't share my infinity for it is inconsequential.
9. In a roundabout way, it's the kind of gesture that could help other countries truly believe America doesn't look down its nose at other nations. By sharing our most prized sporting event with the rest of the world, the rest of the world might think, at least for a day, that we're not a bunch of jerks.
i think i love this argument the most, because it puts out the notion that everyone in the world hates us for hoarding our sports championships for ourselves. Oh, what a great country, America, for staging the Super Bowl in London... yeah right. The rest of the world would feel like we're jamming our sport down their throats like we already try to do with our values. It would not be seen as a gesture of goodwill, because, again, it wouldn't do anything for non-american football fans. nobody else cares about the super bowl.
here's the link to the article... see for yourself if i'm being too judgemental... i don't think i am.
http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/news?slug=maybealondonsuperbowlisn&prov=tsn&type=lgns
anyway, back to being italian and why its amazing... i think i might even qualify for italian citizenship. how cool would that be? apparently, a lot of coutries in the world determine your citizenship status not by where you were born, but who you're descended from. my great-grandparents immigrated here from northern italy, and my grandmother was born before my great-grandfather aquired u.s. citizenship. because of that i've always known that my father qualifies for italian citizenship, but, i just read that perhaps i do as well. all this is meaningless though, i'd have to track down birth certificates that probably don't exist anymore, but it's still cool to ponder. i mean, imagine the benefits of having an EU passport... being able to travel the world without everyone hating you, and, it would make traveling in Europe even easier that it already is, shorter lines in the airports... and when you land they'd say "Welcome Home." I have a friend, oh, i don't know if i came up with a name for him yet... I'll call him Bat. Anyway, Bat has a British and American passport, so when he flys to London they greet him with "Welcome Home, sir." and when he flies back to the states they also say, "welcome back" pretty cool, i'd like that. According to wikipedia, the absolute final word on EVERYTHING, you can qualify for Italian citizenship if (through jus sanguinis)...
Your paternal or maternal grandfather was born in a country other than Italy, your paternal great grandfather was officially recognized as an Italian citizen at the time of his birth, neither you nor your father nor your grandfather ever renounced your right to Italian citizenship.
yep, i'd say i qualify then. i love the provision "ever renounced your right to Italian citizenship," can't renounce something you never knew you qualified for. that would be sweet to hold dual-citizenship, have two passports, be served by two embassies and consulates when traveling abroad. being able to move to italy in case you committ a horrible crime because they don't extradite citizens... at least that's true on law and order. and i wouldn't really plan on really ever using that perk.

DAY 32
May 15, 2009
Fri 1:11 AM
almost forgot to blog tonite... this morning, technically this morning. well, here i am, typing away. i feel like there was something i wanted to talk about... nope, nothing. i got a job interview next week, so that's cool. one day removed from college and i've already set up a job interview... not bad for this economy, or rather, this job market. getting psyched for california, thinking of all the stuff i want to do. i have a feeling that when i get there i won't want to leave... one day, soon, one day i'll be moving to california.
i just hope i can hop on an earlier flight, i don't see why not. if anything, from the flights i've checked out nwa... as i type that i'm thinking of the hip-hop group and not the airline... i mean, northwest airlines has more flights from minneapolis to san diego than detroit to san diego... so why my layover is in detroit i don't know. for some reason it was cheaper that way. whatever, i'll try to get out there earlier. if anything, maybe i'm doing them a favor, less flights increases the chance that they've overbooked. i really hate when airlines do that. can you imagine if other situations or events had the same policy? "I'm sorry sir, yes, you bought a ticket to the Super Bowl, but you see, the stadium is full. If someone leaves, then you can go in." What a scam. If I buy a seat on that flight, then I want to be seated on that flight. I will never fly United again... but that's a different story altogether (I had to beat them to death with their own shoes). ok, that in the parenthesis there, that's a quote from Wayne's World 2, i just couldn't end my sentence without it.
ugh, work work work, that's all i do until my vacation. i guess it's a tradeoff. the other morning on the radio, they were talking about the fixed 1985 NBA draft. Now, i really don't care at all about the nba, but now that i know this, wow, i really don't care for that league. have you heard about this? I didn't until recently, but apparently in 1985 (the first year the league implemented the 'lottery system'- where they picked out of a few teams to see who got the first pick) it was rigged in favor of the knicks. seven envelopes were placed in a spinning basket thing, and one envelope was banged against the side of the basket while the others were tossed in gently. of course, stern grabbed the one with the bent corner- the one jammed against the side. and that envelope contained the picture of the new york knicks- the largest market out of all the teams. of course the nba wanted the knicks to get the first pick, which of course was patrick ewing. here's the video, check it out for yourself
notice how the guy jammed the fourth envelope in there? now, pause it at exactly 5:28 and you can see the bent edge on the envelope that stern is about to grab... he does a good job of flipping it though. and when he holds it up you can see the bottom right corner is bent. and the way stern explains the rules... he sounds nervous, and sounds like he's explaining too much to cover his ass. i think it was completely fixed, rigged, whatever you want to call it. the nba only had to gain from the top pick going to the largest media market. stupid new york, stupid nba.
fascinating stuff though, right? i can't believe i wasn't aware of this before. that's all, got to get some sleep.

DAY 31
May 14, 2009
Thu 1:12 AM
damn capitals... damn penguins. wasn't even close. sloppy puck handling, too many turnovers. semin just sucked this series. it was like they didn't even show up to play. although, i gotta admit, this whole series it seemed like they were being outplayed by pittsburgh, i mean, it was like the caps just got lucky and just rode ovechkin's coat tails the whole way. the penguins dominated with their forechecking, and their defense was just outstanding, whereas it seemed the caps had none. and the rookie netminder, varlamov did great, it's hard to defend when you're constantly getting pounded with shots. the score could've been a lot higher. the penguins got rebounds, the caps never did. the caps turned the puck over constantly, pens didn't. ugh. i amazed they made it to a game seven against these guys. dammit dammit dammit.
oh, and on another note, i am now done with college. yep. done. had my last final today at three, financial institutions. not hard, actually, there were only three questions that i was conflicted on, three out of thirty. but, there were three extra credit questions as well, i answered the first two (at least i think i did) and the third dealt with net present value, which is quite difficult to figure out without a financial calculator, which i did not bring because the questions were all definition questions. i had my graphing calculator, but that did me no good. so, i just wrote 'shoot, should've brought my financial calculator :)' the smiling face i wrote upside, can't do that here on the computer. i hope the professor enjoys that.
but, caps losing, me being done with college, all of this pales in comparison to what happened tonight. i learned how to do tricks with my Zippo. well, ok, not tricks, rather, trick... but it's the coolest one. it's where you flick it open and light it by sliding it on your jeans. oh yeah, i mastered it. i am cool. too bad i don't smoke cigarettes. an excuse to hang out with those that do smoke... so i can show off my newly aquired skill.
that's all, gonna put some more songs on the walkman, i've been adding a lot of hip hop lately, snoop dogg, tupac, dr. dre, coolio... good west coast hip hop. i'm all about the west coast hip hop, i did their sound. it's like pepsi/coke... west coast hip hop versus east coast hip hop, everyone's got their preference. in my book, its all about the west coast sound. you won't find any sean combs or biggie smalls on my walkman.

DAY 29
May 11, 2009
Mon 11:21 PM
CAPS WIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I feel so great, a must win, game six, to force a tie series 3-3. Won in overtime in Pittsburgh. Game seven Wednesday in Washington. Will most certainly be watching. It will require me to postpone my nightly pub gathering Wednesday... but it must be done. Nyet Penguins, Nyet! It's all Capitals!
Two finals today, two down, two to go. International Finance in the afternoon, went fine (worth half my grade... insane, never have I had a final weighted 50% before). Retail Management final in the evening... harder than I thought it was gonna be. No matter, Capitals won, and I'm not on the verge of failing in any of my classes.
Venture Finance final tomorrow night, Financial Institutions final Wednesday afternoon. Then done. Done with college. Undergrad at least... grad school remains to be seen. But not anytime soon, perhaps in the future.
Nothing interesting, just a great hockey game! If the Caps prevail on Wednesday, I shall celebrate with a tall, cool pint of 1664. And should they lose, I will drown my sorrows in a tall, cool pint of 1664. Or, Strongbow, perhaps Strongbow is the better consolation choice.
I don't really feel like blogging much anymore... too excited. I think I'll use my renewed energy to put songs on my walkman... yeah, good use of my time. Will have to set my alarm at 8 and make sure i'm up in time to hear Czaban's take on the Capitals' victory.
Oh, and got an email from my friend Q concerning my itinerary for California. I have a four hour layover in Detroit. Not cool. I think maybe I'll go to the airport early and see if I can get on an earlier flight. The perks of flying solo and only taking carry-on luggage. I've done it before, I know how to work the counter. More time in the sun!

p.s. I don't know if it's the excitement over the Caps win, or the fact that I've been studying so much lately, but my capitalization and punctuation seems almost too good in this blog.

DAY 28
May 10, 2009
Sun 11:43 PM
back in milwaukee... arghh, finals this week. four finals spread over three days... not too bad. well, we'll see. this weekend was a good diversion though, avenue q and today, Star Trek!
It was awesome, really good. Not the greatest Star Trek movie, but definitely in my top five, maybe even top four, its hard to say. There were a few things i didn't like, a romance was created between Uhura and Spock that was random and unnecessary. but every American movie has to have a love story somewhere, so there it was. It wasn't explained, and Spock isn't exactly the most romantic character in film, so it just seemed forced. Also, it marginalized the role of Uhura... she didn't seem to be the valuable member of the crew like she is in the original movies and show... it seemed like she was just there for the romantic role, which is too bad as basically the only woman in the movie. but, other than that, it was really good, i had my doubts- it was said to be a star trek movie for non-star trek fans, but i think both can enjoy it, which should be the ultimate goal. success! and i just read that the original movies come out on blu-ray this week, and soon shall be on my shelf next to Slumdog Millionaire and Terminator (I alphabetize my movies... yes, i'm rather anal about a lot of things).
a good weekend back in appleton, although, i know already what i will miss most about milwaukee this summer... the variety of radio stations. in appleton it's 105.7 wapl, or nothing. and wapl plays a lot of rush, my only complaint. twice today i heard it, and only twice was i listening to the station. i hate rush, an overated band in my opinion. i just don't dig their sound. but, they're not as bad as nickelback (nobody can be that bad). i have a theory about that, canadians just can't rock. the british definitely can, americans can, aussies can... sorry canadians. i can't think of any canadian bands except nickelback and i absolutely loathe them. canadians can play hockey, they can smoke marijuana with no repercussions, and they can make good maple syrup (ok, i'm just guessing on that last one, but i figure the maple leaf is on their flag for a reason right?). but they can't rock. leave that to the rest of us english speaking nations.
now i should really get some sleep, finals tomorrow!

DAY 27
May 10, 2009
Sun 12:33 AM
dammit washington... caps lost tonight. lost a close one to the pens in overtime... again. arrrggghh. dammit. they play again monday night... and of course i have a final, won't be able to watch. seems to me like the capitals like to procrastinate... they always play a series to seven games. but they have to win monday to force a game seven, which would be in DC. but monday's game is in pittsburgh... i really really hope they can pull it out.
watching CNN coverage of the white house correspondent's dinner. he's makes a good comedian, of course, his delivery is much better than the last guy. and wanda sykes was there as well, she was pretty hilarious too... she didn't hold back. although, i'm not sure any of them can hold a torch to stephen colbert's speech a few years ago at the correspondent's dinner... that was the best.
oh, and saw avenue q today... hilarious. absolutely hilarious. the bad idea bears... so great. i can't really describe the show... i don't know how i would, except that its an R rated musical starring puppets... and its a parody of sesame street. try to picture that in your head. just finishing up my laundry... i'm home right now, what else would i be doing? and i also put some more songs on my walkman... slowly but surely. i wish i wasn't so anal about making sure all the information embedded in each song in correct; it didn't matter with my ipod, no info showed up except title and artist. now, i need the title, artist, album, release date, genre, and cover art. and i can't put a song on without that info. so i downloaded a special program that allows me to add all the information... which requires me to look it up on wikipedia, enter it, save the album cover, add that, then drag them onto my walkman and check to make sure it transferred correctly (sometimes it doesn't). tedious. i think i have about 70 songs on now... as compared to over 600 on my old ipod mini. i'll get there, and it'll be great when i do.
star trek tomorrow... i'm excited, but i'm not holding my breath. i know its a star trek movie for non-star trek fans... and i'm definitely a star trek fan. we'll see how it is

DAY 26
May 9, 2009
Sat 12:12 AM
no longer in milwaukee, appleton is my destination of the day. just got here about 45 min. ago. great drive at night in the rain. the one downside of my car is the headlights are very weak, and my windshield wipers- they do more harm than good. first they wipe the water up so you can't see, then they smear it... i didn't turn them on. honestly, it makes it worse. something to put on my list of things to get, new wipers.
rather uneventful day today, got up, packed, took the bus to my sister's work so she could give me a ride to my job and then meet me there so we could head right to appleton. funny thing though, walking to her job i came across a woman with her child on a leash, and the child looked to be about four. no kidding. i just thought to myself, man, sorry kid, i'm embarrassed for the both of us right now. how degrading for your child is that? and the kid leash was, no joke, about two feet long. what's the point of that? hello, just hold your kids hand, its like a built-in leash.
then i walked into her place of residence and had time to kill, and i saw a sign that said complimentary 30 min. facial. i thought, what the hell, i like nice skin. yeah, complimentary facial if you buy two items... you know how much skin care stuff costs? boy did i get suckered, and my free 30 min. facial was really an 8 minute facial that cost me about $70 worth of cream and toner i doubt i'll actually use. now, just now typing out how much i spent, i'll make sure i do use it. at least the ladies at the counter were nice... i'm such a sucker.
off to work, where time actually went quick for once. and i schedule my break perfectly to see the end of the caps-pens game... my team lost. now the series is tied 2-2. hey, tomorrow nights game is in DC though. C'mon Caps! I have a feeling this series is going to go to seven games... again. geez capitals, can't you win in less than seven?
after work my sis came with my car and we drove back... and she brought me popeyes! mmm, their chicken is the best. we ate those little biscuit sandwich things, which are tasty, but crumble all over. i had so many crumbs on my seat when i got out... and my car, unlike my room at home or my apartment, is immaculately clean. i guess that's cause i park it outside and i don't want anyone to steal anything. no, that's not true. even when i park at home my car is insanely clean. i just hate dirty, messy cars. even if i am usually the only one in it.
oh, and we watched the daily show last night and they were showing clips of the president of pakistan. apparently he's in the u.s. to ask for more money, because the $10 billion we gave them in the first place wasn't enough. we wanted them to use the money to fight off the taliban (who are now less than a hundred miles from islamabad) but instead they used the money to beef up defenses against india... our ally, the largest democracy in the world. c'mon pakistan, dude, don't worry about india, worry about the crazies in your own country, that's where you should be spending your money. i know you hate india, but let it go, take care of the taliban first please. remember, the nuclear weapons you created to counter india's nuclear weapons... yeah, those. don't let the taliban or other nutballs get ahold of them. please.
it's funny, the pakistani president assured that his army is up to the task of handling the taliban, but yet he still asked for more money. sooo, you have this under control, but you still want an allowance? and when asked what he'd use the money for he said, that's up to the united states, they can decide what we need. soooo, your army is fine, but you want money, but you won't tell us what you need... we can pick? what the f*ck! make up your mind. man, i would not wanna be president. can you imagine dealing with countries like this? dealing with countries this insane is like trying to reason with a kindergartener... you can't do it. you can't reason with them, they don't understand. then you give them the billions of dollars and are surprised when they blow it all on candy they don't need. dammit pakistan, get your act together! stop worrying about india, i know you're obsessed and hate them a lot... but think about it, they have a billion people. A BILLION. What can you possibly do to defend against or defeat that? Nothing. if you want to spite india, then take that money and train your cricket players really really well to beat them on the pitch. i think you'd even enjoy that better than nuking them. and so would the rest of the world.
here's an article on the subject... i know it's good to encourage democracy around the world, but maybe, just maybe, we need to stop giving them money until they make good decisions first. the way it goes now is, they promise to do the right thing, if we give them money, and then they fuck up and then they ask for more money to do the right thing they didn't do in the first place. see how this is a vicious cycle? maybe i'm wrong on this one, read the article and decide for yourself.
http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/World/Obama-commits-to-democracy-in-Pak/articleshow/4494057.cms
ignore the fact that the article is from the times of india... it's very non-biased in my opinion.
tomorrow should be a fun day... hoping the capitals can retake control of this series.

DAY 25
May 8, 2009
Fri 12:43 AM
today i had my last classes ever as an undergrad... i feel like i should care more. i feel like i should be more excited. not sad, i can't say i'll really miss college much. all those people who say its the best time of your life... go suck a lemon. if this is the best time of my life then my life is really gonna suck from here on out. being in massive debt, eating cheap crappy food, being stressed all the time... hurray, best time of my life! i'll admit i like having relaxed summers and more free time, but i'd rather have a full-time job and earn some money instead of just spending it. so many people tell me that in a few years i'll wish i was back in college. they're so wrong, i'm not that person who's overly attached to college, i don't party, i don't do all that crazy college stuff... i lead a pretty tame life and i want to move on. i hate living in transition, i could never get fully comfortable in milwaukee because i knew i wasn't gonna stay here. that's how i felt all throughout college, this is just a temporary phase until i get to live my life, whatever that means.
my freshman year, now that was probably the best year of my life so far... living in dc, having lots of friends (screw you high school), doing fun stuff all the time... it was great. but even as much fun as that was, i gotta think i have better stuff to look forward to in the future. especially because i'm single, i can do whatever i want. hell yeah to not being tied down to one person, place, anything. and i'm glad i have cool parent's who don't guilt me into staying in wisconsin or doing what they want, when they say they want me to do what i want and to be happy, i know they mean it. i mean, i know they'll miss me when i'm a billionaire traveling the globe, but when i'm a billionaire traveling the globe they can come with me!
i have been thinking though, my high school self would hate me right now. graduating from the university of wisconsin milwaukee... my high school self would've seen that as failure. well, screw my high school self, my high school self was too idealistic and naive. i mean, i'm glad my high school self decided to go to gw (props on that looking outside the box of madison), the more i think about it the more i don't regret it, but i've learned that uwm is just as good a school as gwu. even better, considering the ratio of learning to money spent to learn. complete improvement in that sense. i wonder if my high school self would be more disappointed to learn i'm graduating from uwm or the fact that i've gained so much weight and am now out of shape. looking at me now it's hard to believe in high school i qualified for the state (and national, actually) powerlifting tournament, was all-conference in golf, and lettered twice in track and field. not to mention i earned the presidential fitness challenge award. you know how hard that is to get? that put me in the top 15 percent of all americans my age and gender as far as fitness goes. and that's by 1985 standards, by 2001 (the year i earned it) standards that's probably the top 5 percent! man, i was good. and man i wanted that blue patch- and i still have it. for me, it was all about the hardware... or, i guess software in this case. that's gonna be my main goal now that i'm done with school, get in shape! I've already begun with my eating habits, lots of protein, clean carbs, low cal. i'm already seeing improvements. my staples are eggs, cottage cheese, tuna, and cornish game hens. i'd hoped to be further along with my goals before my trip to california, but that's ok, this summer i'll have lots of time to workout and get my act together. my goal is to get back down to what i weighed when i was a freshman in high school (the year i won the presidential fitness award). and the only reason i know what that is is because of powerlifting, i remember what weight class i was in. but unlike most people i don't just want to lose weight and get skinny, i want to build muscle and get in shape. that's the secret to losing weight and keeping it off. people think just running on the treadmill everyday will do it, they're so wrong. a good weight program is key, at rest muscle burns a lot more calories than fat, so build muscle and keep the weight off. just doing cardio burns calories, but it won't shape your body. i don't care as much about being thin, i mean, i definitly want to shed some pounds, but i was never a stick, i want to be a healthy weight. and as far as diet goes, if i just wanted to get thin the easiest way would be to starve myself, but that's not healthy. and, for me, that wouldn't be the easiest. i like food way too much, so i'll stick to eating healthy food that i like, and try to limit the portions. no crazy fad diets, its all about eating clean foods... like the protein i mentioned earlier. and as far as carbs- oatmeal, brown rice, potatoes, sweet potatoes, vegetables, and fruits. stay away from processed sugars and over refined carbs like white breat and white rice. it's about balance, carbs are not bad. in fact, your body needs a certain amount of carbs to function, and carbs work with protein to build muscle and lose weight. cut out all carbs and your body goes into ketosis, which is an undesirably state where your body thinks its starving and will lead to stagnant results in the weight room. and your body also needs fats. low fat diets are popular because fat is higher in calories than protein and carbs. one gram of carbs or one gram of protein is four calories, one gram of fat is nine. but, like carbs, fats are not all bad and are also necessary in certain amounts. good fats are found in such foods as peanut butter, avocados, and olive oil. i try to get 40% of my caloric intake from protein, 40% from carbs, and 20% from fat. but again, these aren't riged requirements, more guidelines. if one day i eat 37% protein, 41% carbs and 22% fat its ok, i can't let it derail all my other efforts. how do i know all this... the encyclopedia of modern bodybuilding by mr. arnold schwarzenegger. that, and a few issues of muscle and fitness. there's tons of good tips out there. i'm not shooting for bodybuilding results or anything, but they knew how to get in shape before it was popular. inside those magazines are time-tested strategies, and people with all different kinds of goals can gain insight in their pages. one of my favorite articles was about the 25 top muscle building foods. my last trip to the grocery store included a lot from that list. the most important thing i've learned is that a good complimentary diet and workout plan doesn't have to be overly limiting... if you put too many restrictions on yourself you're doomed to fail. it's also important what you eat at what times of the day. more carbs in the morning and afternoon (so they can be burned throughout the day) and more protein in the evening (to stimulate muscle growth after workouts). before workouts a protein shake and a piece of fruit (apple, orange, nothing too heavy). after workout another protein shake and some gatorade. for breakfast i usually eat eggs and oatmeal, along with vitamins. for lunch, maybe some tuna and some sliced sweet potatoes. and dinner, a game hen with maybe a small side of beans. beans are good because they're high in fiber, and fiber is good because one gram of fiber is four calories (it's a carb) but, those four calories dont really count because your body can't digest it. so foods high in fiber are actually lower in calories than what is on the label. if i find myself hungry at night (happens a lot) i reach for cottage cheese. it's the perfect late night snack. i know people always say don't eat a lot at night, and that's a valid statement, but while you shouldn't eat a huge meal right before bed cottage cheese is actually really good to eat because it contains cassein protein, which slowly digests and fuels your body at night during rest. carbs are bad to eat before bed, they'll just get stored as fat. but cassein protein goes to work restoring and building muscle, especially on workout days. and lots of rest is required too, which is usually not hard for me to do.
ok, wow, didn't expect my blog to go into my fitness regimine. but, whatever. originally i was gonna write about my foreign film collection, but i didn't want to really do that. and then i thought i'd just write a short blog tonight and put songs on my walkman... well, i just can't seem to stick to anything. eventually i'll get to those other things. i'm out

DAY 24(i)
May 7, 2009
Thu 12:23 AM
two blogs in one day... perhaps i need more activities in my life. caps lost tonight, oh well, it's ok, that's why nhl playoffs are conducted in series... one loss is not the end. they still lead the series 2-1, and if they win on friday they have a chance of winning the series in washington saturday night.
that morning rant blog really took a lot out of me. i'm ashamed to say, after writing it, i went back to sleep for two hours, not sleep really, just lying in my comfy bed. comfy bed indeed. ahhhh, so good. i am of course, sitting in it now, and i can't help but think that the green bay packers lean pillow (i don't know what to really call it, its one of those bigger, thick pillows with arms on the side for sitting up with) is one of the greatest gifts i ever received. one of the most thoughtful and useful to be sure. Leave it to my friend Tiger. I mentioned it once my first year in college that it would come in handy because of the way my dorm/closet was set up, mentioned it once in passing and a few months later on my birthday she got me one. and what kind do you get the girl from wisconsin, a packer one of course!
so, this pillow comes in most handy during my late night blogging sessions. so, today, up early, rest, class, pub to watch the game and trivia. and by game i mean caps game. that was a no go for watching the game (for reasons that won't be discussed here) so they missed out on further business from me and we left before the trivia started. no big loss, as much as i enjoy the trivia, i'd rather watch my second favorite sports team than play it anyday. yeah, i put the capitals above the brewers, despite living in milwaukee. no team can ever hold my attention and affection like the green bay packers, but, i'm sorry baseball fans, hockey is so much more fun to watch. especially live. i'd take hockey live over football live. but i take football on tv over hockey on tv. i just wish i could follow the caps more and watch them on tv, but its hard not living in dc. thank you playoffs. also, i have a hard time getting into MLB in general, its so skewed towards the yankees, red sox, and all those rich teams. i mean, the brewers are doing a great job putting together a competitive team, but when you have teams who just buy up all the talent and no salary cap, i just lose interest. i like sports to be fair from the beginning, and all teams have an equal chance. that doesnt exist in major league baseball. luxury tax? don't make me laugh. and steroids, that definitely tainted it as well, i think.
right now i'm watching ong bak: thai warrior. an excellent film. in fact, the film that started my foreign film collection. i wanted to watch district b-13 (or in francais, banlieue 13). i realized i don't have that here in milwaukee with me, so ong bak it is. oh man, right now its one of the best scenes in the movie, where ting fights the big aussie. awesome martial arts flick featuring muay boran, a more brutal predecessor to today's muay thai kickboxing. knees and elbows go flying in this film. the tagline is, no computer graphics, no stunt doubles, no strings attached. although the claim to no computer graphics is a lie, there are two scenes where it's pretty obvious, when sparks fall in the underground fight club and when all the patrons flip quarters at the victor. apparently, people hoard american quarters in bangkok. so, the plot leaves a lot to be desired... young man from a rural thai village travels to bangkok to retrieve the village's decapitated buddha head. because, you know, if you leave your village's sacred buddha head in a city like bangkok your village will be cursed. oh, and he's an awesome fighter who kicks butt along the way. that's all you need to know. that and the villain is something out of an old bond movie... insanely over the top, in a wheelchair, speaks with one of those voicebox things through a hole in his throat from smoking. it's one of those foreign films that you could actually watch without subtitles and know what's going one. oh man, he just did a flying knee to the crazy hair dude's chest. and now he's fighting mad dog. another flying knee... alright.
i was gonna write tonight about ong bak and the first time i watched it, and how i got into foreign films and such. and b-13, that's kinda a continuation story of the ong-bak one. tomorrow, tomorrow i'll write it, i don't forsee anything interesting happening to me tomorrow (class, work). and i want to get some sleep. damn, now i want some pad thai. so good. that was one of the things i did in dc during evenings that i had no plans, which i must say, happened relatively infrequently compared to here in milwaukee (outside my home state i had more friends and there was more to do). i would go to the thai place on penn (a thai restaurant literally called thai place) order pad thai to go, and watch ong bak. other times i would order chinese from panda cafe (also, conveniently located up the street on penn) and watch infernal affairs or one of my many hong kong films. thai place was so good. so was panda cafe. i never let it phase me that other students told me it frequently got shut down for health inspection violations. i don't care as long as your general tso's, chicken brocoli, and sweet and sour chicken tastes good. it's a chinese restaurant for gosh sakes, if it hasn't been shut down at least once they're probably doing something wrong. man, i miss all those good restaurants up on penn, there was also froggy bottom pub (good pub food and once a week they made excellent vietnamese pho) and mehran- a pakistani or punjabi place that had a great lunch buffet. great for a student on a budget. and how did i afford to eat out all the time... well, gw made me. they didn't have a cafeteria so the meal plan was basically a debit card (gworld card) that you could use all over the foggy bottom area, and beyond. every restaurant within a pretty good radius of the university took it, even some several minutes away. there was a joke about how you could use your gworld card to buy some häagen-dazs ice cream in georgetown and then walk across the street and buy some from ben and jerrys!
i remember one time i went to thai place with Slurpee and Edge, and they had fruit flavored ice cream for dessert, slurpee ordered their orange ice cream and he literally got a frozen orange that they somehow hollowed out and filled with cream. I don't know, we had a good laugh about it, the orange looked like it had been sitting on dry ice it was so frozen, not to mention almost completely unedible. Slurpee had to wait almost 30 minutes for it to somewhat thaw before he could peel it and start eating it, it was insane. I guess you had to be there.
oh, and i vowed i wouldn't mention this again because its all i wrote about this morning, but, apparently the governor from minnesota has thrown in his two cents regarding this whole b farve thing. whatever minnesota, you can have the washed up raving-egomaniac diva quarterback. I'd rather have two senators.

and here's a clip from ong bak, so you can see what i'm talking about.

DAY 24
May 6, 2009
Wed 9:19 AM
welcome to the big S blog, morning edition. enjoy it, because this will probably never happen again. i don't even have class until 3:30, what the hell am i doing up? i get up at 8 now because then i can listen to bob and brian and their dc-based sports guy czaban, and today did not disappoint. (spoiler alert, this blog is one big rant against that asshole b farve, so if you don't care read about this anymore and you've moved on, don't read ahead. i applaud you, because i haven't gottan to that indifferent state yet. i'm still full of complete and utter hate)
that ravin' egomaniac diva former packer quarterback has been dominating discussion lately, they called him the king of liars and said he deserved to be the first one carved on the mount rushmore of douchebags. mount douchemore. ok, i thought it was really funny. then czaban said espn is like charlie brown and farve is lucy... everyone knows he's feeding you a load of lies and he's gonna pull the football. i love how espn is reporting on this like it might happen... wake up worldwide leader of sports, it is happening. i know its hard to fathom a guy like benedict farve lying (because, you know, there's no history of this) but when he texts dilfer saying its not going to happen, that's code for, it is. they said that playing for the jets was just prison time and that of course minnesota was always his goal, and that he'll even put up with mini camps and training in the offseason to get what he wants. and clearly he's doing this not out of love of the game and he just wants to play, no, he just wants to play the packers. why else would minnesota be the only option. it's too bad his blind hatred for the packers is hiding the fact that while, yes, at minnesota he'll get to play two games against green bay... but then he still has to play 14 games that aren't against green bay. we'll see how this turns out. i just watched a video on espn.com where somebody invoked his "childlike intensity for the game." i don't want to hear that anymore. b farve plays with childlike intensity because he is childlike. he is. the pathological lying, the coming back to play only for revenge, the uncontrollable emotion... the guy has the emotional and mental capacity of a five year old. and that might be an insult to five year olds, i'm sorry. dan wetzel wrote an excellent article highlighting farve's diva behavior, and what i liked most was how he compared him to terrell owens. you know, that guy everyone hates. but not b farve, no, he's pure. he's done basically everything owens has except the suicide attempt... on his life anyway, not his career and legacy. someone came up with an comparison chart, it's worth taking a look at.
http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/blog/shutdown_corner/post/The-Brett-Favre-Terrell-Owens-comparison-chart?urn=nfl,161421
now, is terrell owens despised and farve heralded because of race issues. I don't know, and I'm not the person to comment on that, but, i do believe that the white-dominated media could certainly be called the brett farve fanclub... all those old white guys who comment on these things never say anything bad about the "good ol' boy." I hate that term, the real good ol' boys are usually douchebags. naive redneck douchebags that normal people don't want to be around. and have fun with him minnesota, you're getting a guy that doesn't want to play for you, he just wants to play against his old team. yeah, have fun with that for 17 weeks. it wasnt enough for him to leave home, he wants to throw a molotov cocktail back through the window and burn all the memories.
even seeing clips of super bowl xxxi will be hard now, mainly because i don't want to see that guy happy. ever. again. douchebag. i mean really, the vikings? i honestly don't think i'd care as much if he went to even the bears, because despite what people outside the midwest think, packer fans really don't care about the bears, its the vikings we absolutely loathe.
i just read a headline on espn.com... Farve, Vikes to discuss Playing. No really, you think? I thought childress was gonna meet with farve to discuss organizing a charity golf outing. Why the fuck would they meet if not to discuss playing? gosh, way to be completely behind the curve on this one espn. first its reported they're gonna meet in an undisclosed location, then you report they're gonna discuss playing... i thought that was a given. everything i see and read on espn.com still talks about this as only possibility and not as already happening. i saw one reporter now improve the odds to 50/50 that he plays in minnesota... as cartman once said, jesus tap-dancing christ, get with the times kyle! that doesn't come across as well typed out, but take my word for it, its a funny line when spoken by cartman in the chinpokomon episode.
on the radio this morning czaban asked the good question of, would it have been better if ted thompson had not let farve go to the jets and kept him to his contract. and i agree with bob or brian's, i don't remember who said it, response... no, because then we never would've had the chance to see his true character. i completely agree with that. and i honestly think that thompson was trying to save farve from himself, hoping he could send farve to the jets for a year, let him get his 'desire to play' out, difuse his anger towards the packers and move on. apparently not, you can't stop the ticking time bomb that is b farve. and i'm glad we know this now, what a hateful, selfish, petty person he really is. we would've been left in the dark. now we see farve's true colors. and apparently they're purple and gold.

DAY 23
Moscow on the Potomac... man, i just love how that sounds. i'm still on a high from last night, and it continued today because i got my new caps hat in the mail... it's pretty sweet. no longer will i have to rock the old logo. all i need now is an ovechkin sweater and i'm all set.
so, moscow on the potomac got me thinking of other clever nicknames for my favorite Russian-infested ice hockey team based in the nation's capital. I came up with a few... The Red Army, Washington Kremlins, Comrade Capitals... i'm pretty proud of myself. that's what i did in class today, and let's be honest, it was much more interesting than actually paying attention. it's my final week of classes ever, can you blame me? me brain checked out a long time ago.
be careful, i have chlamydia
simple, accurate, and to the point. i guess you could also say, 'don't let anyone in your pouch without a glove.' nah, i like the first one better. i mean, c'mon, koalas? they're not even mammals. if an animal like a donkey or an ape came down with chlamydia it would be weird, but at least somewhat plausible considering the stupid stuff some humans do. but a koala? A KOALA?
ok, so i just read that apparently chlamydia affects a wide range of animals, but still, i think it's pretty funny.
right now i'm watching total recall. stephen colbert mentioned it last week on his show, my sister saved it on the dvr for me to watch. i love any and all mention of this film. i even saved a short clip from The Onion entitled, "Science Teacher Struggles to Justify Showing Total Recall." the clip is hanging next to my bed. Hilarious, maybe in the future i'll post the entire article. not now. now i want to watch. my favorite scene is going on... Last Resort... oh, mutant three-breasted prostitute... now, cue favorite scene... Quaid is walking towards Melena. Mutant with one eye looks annoyed... still walking slowly towards each other... oh, GREAT! I LOVE THIS MOVIE. oh, and here's the guy who's connected to Kuato (i'm not gonna explain the plot of the film, if you want to fully understand what i'm talking about watch the movie... i'll even loan you one of my many copies). The guy who's connected to Kuato also plays the principal in Hamlet 2, i had that on earlier. Hilarious. "Can you tell me how, a little boy, from a dairy farm in Manitoba, who dreams of acting but can't do it very well, and can never get a DECENT AGENT!" Great movie too.
yes, but it can't hold a torch to Total Recall... god how i love the late 80's/early 90's sci-fi hooker clothing. Not to mention Arnold Schwarzenegger is the greatest actor ever. Ever.
salbrent
p.s. and i'm dead serious about Arnold. He is the best. I'll take him in a movie over any actor.

DAY 22
May 5, 2009
Tue 12:47 AM
Moscow on the Potomac does it again... Caps win tonight! Well, actually, I guess last night, seeing as how I'm posting this after midnight. whatever. It was a good day, I got out of my evening class early and was able to watch the third period, got to see the two final goals by Ovechkin, the god of hockey. First career playoff hat trick for Ovie, I even threw my hat at the TV in celebration. Makes me wonder if people bring spare hats to hockey games in the event of a hat trick, or are people that willing to part with their hats? I certainly am not, throwing my hat at the tv was hardly a sacrifice, I wouldn't throw it on the ice had I been there. And the Brewers won, 16 in a row wins against the pirates. So, both my teams won tonight against pittsburgh teams, alright.
I'm glad that i have positive things in sports to celebrate, seeing as how it's almost a certainty that asshole brett farve (yeah, i know that's not how his name is spelled, but because he's such a prick now i'm gonna spell it like it sounds) is gonna play for the vikings next year. when that happens, he'll become benedict farve. i think its quite a good analogy really, brett farve and benedict arnold, people will say well, think of all the good he did when he played for the packers. yeah, i won't deny that once upon a time he was a good quarterback, a quarterback i worshipped. but it's all about what you've done lately. everybody forgets the fact that benedict arnold was undoubtedly the greatest american revolutionary war general not named george washington (just as you could say brett farve was the greatest green bay packer quarterback not named bart starr). he captured fort ticonderoga and was a battlefield mastermind who won the battle of saratoga, which (aside from being strategically significant) almost singlehandly convinced the french to aid in the struggle, which was pivotal in american success during the war. but nobody remembers all this, they remember him for switching sides and attempting to surrender West Point to the British. thus, his name is synonymous with traitor. and soon, too will be brett farve's name to packer fans when he goes and plays with the vikings. ugh, just typing that name makes me ill. the minnesota vikings, no team is loathed more by packer fans then the vikings. all you farve lovers, defend him now! well, ok, defend him shortly when he signs with that purple team that plays in that crappy dome! i am a packer fan, and as such, hope to see him fail miserably. nah, not fail, get hurt. yeah, i hope he comes to lambeau field and one of our new defensive guys (raji, matthews, either or, i'm not picky) smashes him in the mouth. hits him so hard his agent bus cook and all those sycophants farve surrounds himself with in mississippi feel it. i want a joe theisman type injury, somthing for the reels of history. anything less than that will not satisfy me.
here are a few articles i've read lately, i think they're amusing.
http://www.cbssports.com/columns/story/11704772/rss
http://www.theonion.com/content/news_briefs/brett_favre_just_chucks
gotta love the onion. oh, and here's another two... they're not exactly relevant to the above issue, but fascinating nonetheless (if you're a packer fan that is).
http://www.coldhardfootballfacts.com/Articles/11_2103_The_definitive_list:_Top_10_NFL_quarterbacks.html
http://coldhardfootballfacts.com/Articles/11_402_You_take_Rice,_we
ah yes, coldhardfootballfacts.com, a great website indeed.
enough about football, it's may anyway, can't get myself worked up until at least the end of august. oh right, today after class i went to get milk, my sis has been bugging me for several days cause its my turn to buy the skim. it wasn't high on my list of things to do, i really don't use milk like she does. and i mean use, not drink. she doesn't drink milk, she simply lives off of cereal, and i can't blamer her, its good stuff. so, she was getting pretty upset cause she had very little to eat the past few days.
so, i went to the store to get milk. just milk, or so i thought. while i was waiting in line in the soda case near checkout i saw pepsi throwback. what the heck is this, i thought to myself. i hadn't heard of this new pepsi. so i grabbed a bottle and checked, it said pepsi made with natural sugar. Natural sugar? Wow, that which i had complained about a few weeks ago (the fact that american soda can't contain real sugar for whatever reason) had been resolved. well, half resolved, it was still in a plastic bottle. but, take what you can get. (i think maybe my blog has magic powers, i complain about soda not being made with real sugar and pepsi comes out with pepsi with sugar, i complain about never getting an opening shift at work and the next day i get an opening shift... hmmm, i must ration these powers accordingly, you know, can't get greedy). i just had to try this stuff.
so i buy a bottle and put it in the fridge. after about 15 minutes of watching the caps-penguins game (and 15 glorious minutes i might add) i feel parched, so i reach for my pepsi throwback. the first sip was fine, nothing worth noting. after a few more sips i came to the conclusion that, unlike standard pepsi, this "pepsi throwback" hit you with full flavor at the beginning of the taste and then fizzled out at the end. a few more drinks and i was already unimpressed. it was beginning to taste flat and then it hit me... this tasted like diet pepsi! seriously, like diet pepsi. and i hate diet pepsi. apparently i was barking up the wrong tree on this real sugar thing (i'm still not backing down on the glass bottles though). high-fructose corn syrup, i'm sorry. please accept my mea culpa. (sidenote, i just read that canadian and american sugar prices are, apparently, twice the global levels... thus the reason for using corn-based sweetners, makes sense). my sister, getting fed up with my constant commentary about my feelings on this bottle of pepsi, decided that she had to try it in an attempt to get me to shut up. yep, she agreed, tasted like diet pepsi, and she should know, she loves, as she calls it, d p. wow, pepsi made with real sugar tastes like diet pepsi. my taste buds are disappointed and feel let down. so too does my wallet, on the 99 cents i shelled out for this experiment. and my stomach, a diet pepsi with 260 calories... great. here is the proof

vintage is not in when it comes to soda, but, i did finish it. oh, and another thing noteworthy, today i had to do something i haven't had to do in quite awhile, i had to wear a belt with my jeans! i'm starting to win the battle, all that eating healthy and working out apparently can work. good, i'm glad. my goal is to lose enough weight so that i can buy some nice jeans and not have to wear a belt. buy some nice jeans from the buckle, they're expensive, but they hem them for you, a must if you're as lacking in height as i am. and it's completely worth it to shell out a few more bucks for jeans there than at kohls or target, because they do a great job hemming them, take your jeans to a normal tailor and they just cut off some fabric on the bottom, fold them up and do a basic stitch. you look like a square, its incredibly obvious that you had to hem your jeans. i own two pair from the buckle (they don't exactly fit at the moment, but that's neither here nor there) and they did a fantastic job at hemming them. you can't tell the stitch at the bottom of the legs isn't the original. and, another good thing about the buckle is the fact that their women's jeans are sold by waist size, i mean waist measurement like mens jeans. its so stupid that women's pants are sold by arbitrary numbers, you can be a size 12 at one store and a size 16 at another... and i should know. mens jeans, a 36 is a 36 no matter where you go, cause its a unit of measurement. in fact, i own a few pairs of mens jeans, just because they fit better. mens clothes just fit better, its not fair, why can't women wear clothes designed for comfort?
ok, i should really get to sleep now, i actually have stuff to do tomorrow.
